The end of 2019 marked a very crucial period in global history. A tiny microscopic agent took the world hostage and had everyone locked up in their dens. Or, if we look at it from a different angle, Mother Earth chose to heal herself and probably this was her best bet.
Despite this understanding, the daily news of the rising number of COVID positive patients and increasing death rate globally, was discomforting. Everyday I wished that today would be better than yesterday, but reality was far from it. The news of a close friend and her family affected by this virus, came as a major shock to me. My friend, her husband, both her children, her mother-in-law and brother-in-law, all fell in the grip of the Coronavirus. Her husband was serious and needed hospitalization, but unfortunately, it was a nightmare to find one. I tried to help her in every way, reaching out to everyone I could think of, but in vain. This left me in tears. And if this wasn't enough, the news of another close friend, her entire family, including her aged mother testing positive left me in deep pain and distress, with a sense of helplessness at not being able to help them.
As the well known saying goes - “Every pain is a gift. Every pain is an opportunity.”
This unusual turn of events inspired me to reach out and offer emotional and mental support to COVID impacted people, their families, friends and all those who were supporting them in their recovery. I started off with a “COMING HOME” program last year where I shared mindfulness practices. As it was received well, I thought of starting it again at the time of the 2nd wave. But somewhere, I felt the 2nd wave was much more intense and hence needed something more powerful, perhaps a large-scale initiative. My daily ritual of meditation and reflection helped me conceptualize the idea and thus Showers of Compassion was born. I explored my network from A to Z, and to my pleasant surprise, received an encouraging response from several professionals. And a bunch of them jumped on board offering their range of services, wholeheartedly supporting me in my endeavor.
Thus, my vision was born - a collective forum to make compassion, connection, co-creation and resilience the most important currencies of our world, and to provide healing and support to one another. I cherish and nurture my vision of the world - Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family!
With an initiative like Showers of Compassion, I foresee rainbows in a flourishing world that we all dream of.
